How We Grade the Evidence
The World Health Organization’s Benchmarks for the Practice of Acupuncture recognises acupuncture’s applicability across a broad range of conditionswho.int+1, and large individual-patient-data meta-analyses have quantified its effect in chronic painncbi.nlm.nih.gov+1. We translate this landscape into three transparent grades — so you know exactly what the research supports for your condition:
🅰 Grade A — Strong Evidence
Multiple high-quality RCTs and/or individual-patient-data meta-analyses. Recommended in international guidelines.
🅱 Grade B — Moderate Evidence
Positive RCT evidence, but with smaller samples or methodological limitations. Clinically promising.
🅲 Grade C — Emerging / Adjunctive
Biologically plausible, early clinical support, or adjunctive role only — never a substitute for primary medical care.
🦴 Pain & Musculoskeletal Conditions
Our strongest evidence base and the largest volume of clinical work at LOHO Clinic — anchor points, fascia, and nerve pathways.
Chronic Low Back Pain 🅰
Grade A evidence from the landmark individual-patient-data meta-analysis of 17,922 patients across back pain trialsncbi.nlm.nih.gov+1.
Neck Pain (Cervical) 🅰
Included in the Grade A chronic pain evidence basencbi.nlm.nih.gov; a frequent driver of cervicogenic headaches and somatic tinnitus.
Knee Osteoarthritis 🅰
Meta-analyses show clinically meaningful pain and function improvementovid.com; recognised by major orthopaedic bodies including AAOSfrontiersin.org.
Migraine 🅰
Cochrane evidence: at 6 months, 59% of acupuncture patients halved headache frequency vs 54% on preventive drugs.
Tension-Type Headache 🅰
Cochrane: 51% vs 43% responders; recommended by UK NICE for chronic TTH.
Frozen Shoulder 🅱
A LOHO clinical focus — trigger point deactivation across rotator cuff and scapular stabilisers.
Sciatica 🅱
Nerve-root pain addressed through piriformis and lumbar trigger points plus meridian differentiation.
Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) 🅱
Localised trigger point and periosteal needling with graded loading guidance.
Fibromyalgia 🅱
Central sensitisation addressed via segmental neuromodulation and graded session plans.
TMJ Disorders 🅱
Masseter and pterygoid trigger points; closely linked to our somatic tinnitus program.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome 🅲
Adjunctive support for mild–moderate cases; severe cases referred for surgical evaluation.
🧠 Neurological Conditions
Rehabilitation and neuromodulation — always in coordination with, never in place of, neurological care.
Post-Stroke Rehabilitation 🅱
Three-phase protocol using Jin three-needle group points; adjunctive to physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
Bell’s Palsy (Facial Paralysis) 🅱
Stage-based facial needling; best outcomes when started early alongside medical care.
Postherpetic Neuralgia 🅱
Segmental acupuncture around affected dermatomes; non-invasive pulsed RF available for needle-averse patients.
Insomnia 🅱
Evening protocol targeting calming points; often combined with care for the pain or tinnitus driving it.
Trigeminal Neuralgia 🅲
Adjunctive; non-invasive pulsed radiofrequency is our preferred modality for facial nerve points.
Epilepsy (Adjunctive Management) 🅲
Strictly adjunctive — we work alongside your neurologist and never alter anticonvulsant medication. Full safety framing required.
Peripheral Neuropathy 🅲
Adjunctive symptom support, particularly for diabetic and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy.
👂 Ear, Nose & Throat — Including Our Flagship Tinnitus Program
★ FLAGSHIP
The most differentiated area of our practice — built on the anatomy of cervicogenic and myofascial drivers.
Tinnitus (Somatic / Cervicogenic) 🅱
Our flagship program: trigger point acupuncture for tinnitus with a neck or jaw component — supported by a 6-page dedicated knowledge hub covering SCM/trapezius/masseter referral anatomy, venous pulsatile tinnitus, a stepped 6–8 session protocol, THI outcome tracking, and ENT red-flag screening.
Allergic Rhinitis 🅱
Including our refined low-irritation tianjiu herbal patching, developed through HKBU research.
Globus Sensation 🅲
Throat tightness without structural cause — frequently linked to cervical and laryngeal muscle tension.
🍽 Digestive Conditions
Functional gut disorders — where acupuncture’s anti-nausea evidence is among the strongest in the field.
Nausea & Vomiting (Postoperative / Chemotherapy) 🅰
One of acupuncture’s best-established indications; P6 (Neiguan) stimulation is widely studied.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) 🅱
Gut–brain axis framing; often paired with anxiety-support care.

Electroacupuncture protocols with RCT support for slow-transit patterns.
GERD (Adjunctive) 🅲
Adjunctive symptom support alongside gastroenterological management.

Where classical luo (collateral) vessel theory meets modern venous haemodynamics — Dr. Peng’s distinctive academic territory. All Grade C conditions here require vascular evaluation first.

🚨 Before Booking: Check the Red Flags
Some symptoms require medical evaluation before any complementary treatment — e.g., sudden one-sided hearing loss with tinnitus, chest pain with arm symptoms, progressive neurological deficits, or pulsatile tinnitus needing vascular imaging. Our safety checklists are built into every condition page, and consolidated here:
